Porsche’s iconic 911 is going hybrid
  + stars: | 2024-05-13 | by ( Peter Valdes-Dapena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
A hybrid Porsche 911, with its gas engine assisted by at least one battery-powered electric motor, will officially be revealed in an online event on May 28. Porsche itself already sells plug-in hybrid models like the Cayenne e-Hybrid SUV and Panamera e-Hybrid four-door car but a hybrid 911 is another matter. This new hybrid model will be the closest Porsche can get to an electric 911 without raising those sorts of philosophical questions. But we do know the hybrid 911 is clearly faster than the current purely gas-powered 911. The faster time indicates the hybrid 911 has greater power due to the addition of electric assistance.

The electric 1,093-horsepower Taycan Turbo GT, coming to market this summer, has already set two race track speed record for an electric car. High horsepower numbers and eye-popping acceleration are more common among electric cars than gasoline-powered ones, especially since EVs can have multiple motors. This Turbo GT, a new version of the electric Porsche Taycan, features two motors. One, the standard Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, will be fast but reasonably comfortable for street driving. The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package, though, will dispense with backseats and other comfort items to save weight.

Some Tesla Cybertruck owners noticed their new stainless steel vehicles have small rust specks. A few months after deliveries began, some members of a Cybertruck-owners forum started complaining about rust spots on the vehicle. After all, the Cybertruck is the first stainless steel vehicle to be produced since DMC made the stainless steel DeLorean and later halted production in 1982. The extra upkeep isn't entirely unexpected for experienced Tesla owners, many of whom have taken on the role of early adopters. If Tesla hits Musk's ambitious production targets for the Cybertruck, Tesla is likely to face less forgiving buyers, automotive analyst Ivan Drury told BI.

BEIJING — Chinese consumer electronics company Xiaomi on Thursday detailed plans to enter China's oversaturated electric vehicle market and compete with automaker giants Tesla and Porsche with a car model it says it spent more than 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) to develop. Pronounced "Sue Qi" in Mandarin, the Xiaomi SU7 beats Porsche's Taycan and Tesla's Model S on acceleration and other metrics, Lei said during a three-hour presentation Thursday. This is an area of potential advantage for Xiaomi, which is best known for its smartphones and home appliances and previously said it wants to create a "'Human x Car x Home' smart ecosystem." The SU7 is integrated with Xiaomi's smartphones and internet-connected home appliances, Lei announced Thursday. Lei said the vehicle will also be compatible with Apple 's iPhone, iPad, CarPlay and AirPlay.

CNN —The Lamborghini Lanzador is only a concept car for now, but the Italian supercar maker says it offers a preview of the brand’s very first fully electric model which will go into production in 2028. With no space needed for a gas engine — in a gas-powered Lamborghini sports car, it would be behind the seats — the Lanzador has small back seats. Other automakers, like Rimac and Automobili Pininfarina (which uses Rimac technology), already sell electric two-seat supercars costing millions of dollars. Porsche — which like Lamborghini is part of the Volkswagen Group — took a similar approach with its first EV. Lamborghini has committed to selling only “electrified vehicles,” meaning either plug-in hybrid or fully electric, by the end of 2024.

While charging and fueling trucks cost the same, other cars and their electric counterparts differ. It's not yet cheaper to charge some electric cars than to fuel them with gas, a new study suggests. It's not yet cheaper to charge many electric cars than it would be to fuel their gas-powered counterparts up with gas, a new study indicates. Trucks cost about the same to fuel and charge, while entry and midlevel cars and SUVs cost more to charge at home and in public than they do to fuel at a gas station, the group found. Luxury-segment EVs may cost less to charge at home than their gas counterparts would cost to fuel.

Porsche has invested more than $100 million in the development of eFuels. "With this approach we have another lever, another opportunity to reduce the CO2 footprint for the combustion engine-driven cars," said Karl Dums, senior manager of eFuels at Porsche. "Electric cars are more expensive to produce, so they are margin dilutive," said Daniel Schwarz, managing director at Stifel. "And Porsche managed to increase the share of electric cars and increase the profitability in parallel." But critics of Porsche's $100 million push into eFuels argue the resultant fuel will be too expensive and inefficient to ever compete with electrification.
Porsche to raise prices further as profits jump

BERLIN, May 3 (Reuters) - Luxury carmaker Porsche (P911_p.DE) will raise prices by 4-8% in Europe and the U.S. in the second half to combat higher costs that weighed on returns in the first quarter, even as profits and revenue jumped by over 25%, it said on Wednesday. Porsche listed on the stock market in September last year, splitting from its former parent Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) - a decision Meschke said was leading to higher speed in decision-making on products and hiring. The company reported revenue of 10.1 billion euros in the first quarter of 2023 and operating profit of 1.84 billion euros, beating expectations of three analysts polled by Refinitiv. Operating profit in its financial services arm declined to 86 million euros from 102 million previously, which it attributed to the valuation of interest rate hedges and derivatives as well as the impact of the interest rate rise on financing products. Used Tesla Model 3 and Model Ys aren't depreciating substantially, a new study says. Elon Musk's price-cutting frenzy at Tesla doesn't appear to be impacting the company's impressive resale values, according to new data released this week. Slightly more used EVs are being priced just below $25,000 in recent months in order for customers to get the used credit. In September of last year, Tesla made up for roughly two-thirds of the used EV market. This prevents Teslas from flooding the used car market and gives the company more control over its own resale market.

Elon Musk called Bill Gates' understanding of AI "limited" in a tweet on Monday. Gates wrote a seven-page letter about the potential of AI last week. "I remember the early meetings with Gates," Musk tweeted. In a blog post published last week, Gates wrote about how AI could transform the workforce, healthcare, and education. (Gates left Microsoft's board in 2020 after stepping down as CEO in 2000.)
I've tested 20 electric cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks from Tesla, Ford, Porsche, Polestar, and more. But electric cars are quick, convenient, fun to drive, and quiet. Bill Gates questioned whether Elon Musk's current priorities would make him a good philanthropist, taking issue with his fellow billionaire's ambition to send people to Mars. Gates responded saying he doesn't think Musk is one currently but that this may change in future. Asked by BBC journalist Amol Rajan if going to Mars was a good use of money, Gates said: "Not in my view." In April, Musk said he asked Gates if he was short-selling Tesla — in other words, betting that the price of the electric carmaker's stock would fall. In a Bloomberg interview also in February 2021, Gates said that he wished he had "been more on the long side" of Tesla when asked about Musk's claims.

Porsche managed to increase its global deliveries last year by 2.6% despite worldwide supply chain issues that crippled other carmakers as well as sales of its first all-electric car. Porsche's U.S. sales outpaced an estimated 8% to 9% decline in overall auto sales in 2022. Leading Porsche's slight rise in sales last year was a 13% increase in overseas and emerging markets, followed by an uptick of 5.8% in Europe. Most other models experienced notable declines, including a roughly 23% drop in sales of Porsche's all-electric Taycan to 7,271 units. The carmaker said the decline in Taycan sales, including a 16% drop globally, was "due to supply chain bottlenecks and limited component availability."
